The Different Ways of Playing Poker

An important part of any strategy is understanding and knowing the different Poker playing styles. Simply stated, knowing the different kinds of players that you will encounter in any given situation will allow to make the necessary adjustments needed to win the game.

Needless to say there are literally countless Poker playing styles; the fact is that people play the game in varying ways, and one cannot list them all down. However, through the years, there has been a general classification that is agreed upon.

First are the loose players. As their name implies their Poker playing style involves playing starting hands regardless of value, chasing all the way to the river while holding an A7 offsuit, and constantly calling and raising. In a table filled with these players you need a top pair to win, because no one will fold.

The tight player is the exact opposite; their Poker playing style consists of only calling or raising with the best possible hand. For this reason, the pot will usually be very small, and a lot of tight players will fold before the flop.

These players are predictable in that they will only bet with the strong hands, so if they make a sudden raise, you know they have the nuts or something close to it.

Those with a loose and aggressive Poker playing style are called maniacs, and are characterized by calling, raising and re raising constantly. They will bluff often, and the way to play them is by using moderate hands, as they will certainly raise.

The loose and passive are also called calling stations. Their Poker playing style is all about being "part of the action". Comprised mostly of fish, newbies and occasional players, their most distinguishing characteristic is never folding. They will call you all the way to the end. Never bluff against them.

The tight aggressive Poker player is exemplified by their knowledge of pot odds, biding their time, and knowing when to fold. This is the ideal way to play the game, and consequently, will be the most dangerous opponents you will face. The way to play these individuals is to get them to fold, as they are prone to being bluffed.

It is likely that you belong to one of these Poker playing styles, but that need not be the case. In fact it is more ideal to develop your own style, as this will make you more difficult to read and beat.
