Poker Run For Buccaneer Lounge Owners Orphaned Daughter

A poker run will be held in memory of a beloved bar owner who passed away in August to help start a college savings fund for his 4-year-old daughter.

The poker run will be held Oct. 28, and will begin and end at the Buccaneer Lounge located at 440 Barringer Road in Salisbury.

Jimmy "Duke" Christie is the 56-year-old man who owned the Buccaneer for 20 years. He died from a number of ailments on Aug. 8.

"I worked here for 15 years under Duke," said Mary Phillips, organizer of the poker run. "He was like a second daddy to a lot of people."

Saturday's poker run will award the winner a prize package that will include a variety of items. Phillips said that she would mainly like for the participants to have a good time, and to start a college education fund for Duke's daugter, Carmen.

"He touched a lot of people along the way," Phillips said. "This is the least we can do for him."

Phillips said she had the hope of turning the ride into an annual event. Registration for the event will start at 10 in the morning. The $20 registration fee will pay for the cards and food.

"We're going to have a lot of fun," Phillips said. "We're going to get a lot of people together to party and celebrate Duke."
