Learning Poker Basics Fast

Learning the basics of poker is not only easy but is also a lot of fun. Gather four to ten players and try a simple game using the standard playing cards deck. You will learn how to play poker in just a few minutes.

Players should agree on a method of picking the dealer and the opening player. Card dealing in poker is done clockwise. Players place bets by trying to ascertain which player among them has the best poker hand. The bets are deposited in the pot.

All the different poker variants agree on one set of poker hands and rankings. These are listed from the highest to the lowest ranks in this order:

1. straight flush, having five properly sequenced like-suited cards, where the Ace - when used - is either the highest or lowest card; 2. four of a kind, having four cards of matching rank and one added card; 3. full house, having three cards of matching rank and another two cards of matching rank; 4. flush, having five cards in matching suits; 5. straight, having five properly sequenced cards of any suit selection; 6. three of a kind, having three cards of matching rank and two added cards; 7. two pair, having two sets of two cards with matching rank and an added card; 8. one pair, having two cards of matching rank and three added cards; and 9. high card or the card with the best possible value in an assorted hand.

In the same hand, the higher rank is that with the higher card value in the first portion of the combination.

Once the game has started, poker players need to either call a bet, raise the stakes or fold. Calling a bet means making an equivalent bet based on theimmediately preceding player's bet. Raising the stakes means making a higher bet, again based on the preceding player's bet. Folding, on the other hand, means not making any bet and forfeiting all previous bets made. Once a player folds, that player withdraws from the game.

To win, poker players use bluffing techniques. They do everything to make their opponents think that they have the best hand among all the players. The purpose is to urge all other players to fold.

The round finishes when all players have taken their turns, whether to call, raise or fold. If more than one player still stands in the game, there is a showdown. The show of hands displays the actual best hand belonging to the winning player.

If all but one player have folded, though, it is the remaining player who wins regardless of the hand held by that player. A show of hands need not even be called. It is very possible, after all, that the victory was achieved through skillfull bluffing.

Now that you know how to play the game, start practicing to learn poker strategies for winning.
